Dr. Gene and Bette Burrows                                                             Lot # 28

India, Car, Bangladesh, Ivory Coast

Bette was born in White Wright, Texas, and attended Howard Payne University in 1952,  and Lillie Jolly School of Nursing, (Houston, TX), in 1955..

While at Howard Payne University, she met Ronald Gene Burrows .  While Bette worked on her nursing degree, Gene continued his studies at Howard Payne for  3 years and then Baylor University College of Medicine at Houston.

In 1955 Bette and Gene were married, and they went to Cedarville College for a year in 1957.  While at Cedarville they were appointed as missionaries by Baptist Mid Missions to serve in India.

The Burrows served the Lord in India for 25 years.  They went to India with two children and five more were born on the field.

Dr. Burrows was a physician surgeon.  He worked with lepers, the general public and even treated elephants.

Bette worked with her husband in the leprosy colony and general hospital.  She also organized a nursing school, and taught mid-wivery .  She taught in short term Bible institutes, women’s work and children’s clubs.

The Burrows, working feverishly to turn all their work over to nationals, were the last to leave when all foreigners were put out of northeast India in 1983.  They went to Bangladesh in 1984, where they finished building a hospital already in construction, and worked there for 5 years setting up paramedical training for helpers and nurses.

Moslem leaders rose up against the hospital and the government could not protect them, so the hospital was closed.  One year later it was opened by other missionaries.

Their next ministry was in CAR, (Central African Republic).  They filled in for 1 year at the IPPY hospital.  They then took 3 years to get support and equipment to go to the Ivory Coast, where they served another 5 years.

Their next stop was retirement at Missionary Acres.  Dr. Burrows went home to be with the Lord three years later.
